2013 US Trucking News – St. Christopher Fund Offers Scholarships for Veterans
This week, the St. Christopher Fund has announced their mission to support the trucking industry by helping well-qualified, and skilled drivers on the road by offering a scholarship to military veterans. The SCF has stated that it is also a part of their mission to support the development of truck driving as a solid and respectable career. This includes those that are critically needed by their military veterans who have come home needing more than just a job, but a rewarding career.
The St. Christopher Truckers Development and Relief Fund is a 501 truck driver charity that helps drivers whose medical problems have led to financial hardship. The SCF also conducts health research to benefit truck drivers as well as the trucking industry.
Studies have shown that around more than 70% of the 3.5 million professional truck drivers in the US have one or more serious health problems such as obesity, diabetes, sleep disorders, and cardiovascular diseases. Truck drivers also lack the same access to health that a lot of Americans enjoy. This access is limited since truck drivers work irregular hours, spend long durations away from home, and are unable to navigate side streets and parking lots in their trucks to get to a clinic, pharmacy, or hospital. There is also the problem regarding the fact that most truck drivers do not have health insurance.
The unfortunate result of these circumstances is that these drivers are often unable to get treatment in the early stages of their disease, which allows the condition to progress into a much more severe state. Because of this, there is a possibility that the driver may lose his CDL and become unable to work. This creates a downward spiral that leads to extreme financial hardship.
The SCF has also announced that it will offer a $10,000 scholarship to a man or woman who has served the nation. According to their executive director Donna Kennedy, with all that their military veterans have sacrificed for the country, the St. Christopher Fund feels truly honored to be able to provide a scholarship to those veterans in need. They hope that this opportunity will provide one of them with the right tools to succeed in the trucking industry.
The SCF is accepting the scholarship applications for the TBS Factoring Trade School Scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded to a veteran who has shown passion to become a professional truck driver. In addition, applicants must also show financial need. This scholarship was made possible by a $10,000 grant from the TBS Factoring Service, LLC, of Oklahoma City. This is a family business that provides flexible cash flow solutions to independent truckers.
The SCF helps truck drivers and their families who have financial needs due to medical problems. Assistance may come in the form of direct payment for medical services or prescription drugs, assistance with expenses while recovering from illness and out of work, or negotiating price reductions with medical providers and hospitals.
Donations to the SCF have been received from individuals and corporations sensitive to the needs of professional drivers. As of October 31 2013, the SCF has helped 878 truck drivers and their families.
