There are over 3 million truck drivers in the United States alone, and their job is not as nice as many would hope to believe. Over half of truck drivers suffer from one or more serious health problems that can be fatal. Common health problems with truckers include; diabetes, sleep disorders, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. But due to the nature of their job, they lack the health benefits that many Americans enjoy.

Truckers work irregular hours, many times at different hours of the day. Their job causes them to be far away from their home the majority of the time. They can also have a difficult time getting to clinics or hospitals because their trucks are unable to handle the side-streets of the inner city. Also studies have shown that under 1/3 of all truck drivers don’t have health insurance. On top of that, they do not make that much money with their job. So getting medical help can be a struggle for them.

The result of this unfortunate turn of events is that the truckers are unable to treat any illnesses they acquire in their early stages. So their disease or illness becomes worse and worse. Eventually they can be hospitalized and in some cases, face disability. Due to the disability a trucker may acquire, they can be unable to continue with their job as a commercial truck driver and be forced to lose it. They will then be unemployed and have no means to support themselves.

Dave Nemo, after witnessing countless tragic cases involving truck drivers, was compelled to take action. He then created the St Christopher Truckers Development and Relief Fund (SCF). Along with his friend Dr. John McElligott, he founded the organization in 2007.

The SCF’s main purpose and mission is to provide support for truckers and their families when negative financial circumstances arise due to reasons such as injury. Assistance can be provided by direct payment for hospital care or medication or financial help when getting over an illness and out of work. The SCF can also help with negotiating price reductions with hospitals or insurance companies and representing the trucker in his time of need.

By late 2010, the SCF has helped hundreds of people and has been a majorly positive influence in the community. Assistance has been provided through donations by many people who are sympathetic to the problems a trucker can have. Assistance by the STF has included payment for surgeries, living expenses, lowering prices for hospital fees and much more. Guidelines for the help the company gives are in place. There are certain factors that influence how the company acts, such as how much money has come in through donations, the trucker’s situation, and how many other drivers have applied for help.

The SCF has done much to benefit the trucking community and will continue to do so. This non-profit organization has done much for needy individuals and their families, so that the people in the trucking industry can have nothing to fear.
