The US Military has looked into remote-controlled helicopter truck transformers, which can be sent on rescue missions without the need of a driver.

This new drone is in development in order to meet the US Military’s requirements for a new evacuation vehicle. It is currently being tested by Advanced Tactics, a firm based in El Segundo.

Advanced Tactics Inc., a small aerospace company, released its details about their AT Transformer vehicle technology, and announced that a full-scale technology demonstrator has completed its first driving tests. The AT Transformer technology makes possible the world’s first roadable, Vertical TakeOff and Landing aircraft.

Advanced Tactics started their work on the AT Black Knight Transformer in 2010. The Black Knight Transformer is designed for autonomous casualty evacuation and manned or unmanned cargo resupply missions. Its unmanned capabilities keep pilots out of harm’s way, making it the safest casualty evacuation option. Its interior volume is comparable to a Blackhawk helicopter, thus making it well-suited for cargo missions as well.

The patented AT Transformer technology combines the capabilities of a helicopter, such as the ability to take off and land everywhere, with the capabilities of an off-road automobile. The first technology demonstrator, the AT Black Knight Transformer, completed driving tests in December 2013 in Southern California and is scheduled to fly in early 2014.

It is called Black Knight Transformer, and it is capable of both flying and driving. It is also operated by a remote. It utilizes the vertical take-off and landing of a helicopter, and pairs it with the off-road driving capabilities that trucks have.

And what’s even better is that this robotic warrior is also remote controlled.

The vehicle also has a fully-independent ground drivetrain that provides it with off-road driving capabilities, so that it can reach any destination, whether a suitable landing zone is available, or not.

The Black Knight Transformer is the world’s first roadable vertical takeoff and landing vehicle. This capability provides it with a new set of missions that could not previously be performed. As a casualty evacuation platform, the vehicle can land in a safe landing zone away from enemy fire, and then drive to a wounded soldier so that he does not have to be carried, reducing danger to other soldiers.

According to Pop Science, this machine was made as a part of a US Military desire for a multi-mission medical and casualty evacuation unmanned air vehicle/manned ground vehicle.

Essentially, it meets the need of an automobile that can adapt to a variety of situations.

An American government study on medical evacuation has concluded that the use of robots in military missions will allow for casualty evacuations in areas and times that manned platforms should not be allowed to operate in, such as zero-zero weather and contaminated environments.

Advanced Tactics, a firm based in El Segundo, plans to test a remotely operated, transforming, flying, driving evacuation vehicle early this year. According to an interview in the magazine Popular Science with Advanced Tactics’ chief engineer Rustom Jehangir, the US Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory is interested in using the Black Knight vehicle for unmanned cargo resupply missions. Jehangir also says that they have done work on this in the past with other platforms, such as the Lockheed Martin K-Max, but the platform will be much less expensive.

Advantages of the Black Knight Transformer

The purpose behind this strange vehicle is a US Military desire for a multi-mission medical and casualty evacuation unmanned air vehicle/unmanned ground vehicle. It is supposed to be a flying car that can work in a lot of different scenarios. The program is managed by the US Army Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center, with funding a congressional earmark in 2009.

In essence, sending a robot helicopter to evacuate troops that have been wounded is good, since it means that the military can operate in weather that is unsafe for human pilots, and does not risk any more medical personnel that absolutely necessary. If the robot helicopter can also drive like an off-road vehicle, that gives the military even more rescue options.

If troops are skeptical of crawling inside a remotely-driven rescue vehicle, then the Black Knight is also designed for cargo delivery. The US Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory is interested in using the Black Knight vehicle for their unmanned cargo resupply missions.

For these cargo resupply missions, the vehicle can land again in a safe landing zone and drive to its final destination, even if that destination is otherwise inaccessible to ground vehicles. The driving capability is modular and can be removed, in order to provide the aircraft with a significantly increased payload capacity. Alternatively, the ground drivetrain can be replaced with helicopter wheels or skids, or even a boat hull to offer different mission capabilities.

The driving components were tested in late 2013, while the flying aspects will be tested before the end of February.
